McGrawHill PSAT/NMSQT 2nd second edition Christopher Black 8581000050957 Books

I am astonished that this book costs less than the Princeton Review PSAT book, but is twice as big and twice as useful!!! I am a 20-year high school teacher in the Chicago suburbs who also tutors students for the SAT, ACT and PSAT, and this is hands down the most effective tool for tutors and students who are willing to do some serious work preparing for the PSAT. Don't be fooled-the PSAT is important, even though it's a practice SAT, because it is used to determine who qualifies for National Merit Scholarships.

The authors of this book, Christopher Black and Mark Anestis, clearly understand how students learn, what mistakes they commonly make, and how to explain difficult concepts in a way that kids can understand. (Princeton Review and the others don't even pretend that they can improve students' reading or math skills, and so they don't.) Even better, "McGraw-Hill's PSAT" provides tone of practice for students who want to work on improving their reasoning skills, and plenty of diagnostic tests with substantial answer explanations.

Whather you are a parent, a student or a tutor, you will want to use this book.

Black and Anestis get it exactly right in this book: the PSAT and SAT are not simply tests of "how well you know how do take multiple choice tests" (as the Princeton Review claims ad nauseum). It's a test of reasoning skills, and only students who improve those reasoning skills can hope to see great PSAT or SAT score improvements. I've been using this book for a full year, and my students have improved their scores by an average of close to 100 points per section (or 10 points per section on the PSAT). Of course, I'm willing to take a certain amount of that credit, but I don't think it would be nearly as easy without this book.

McGrawHill PSAT/NMSQT 2nd second edition Christopher Black 8581000050957 Books Reviews

I use this with all my 8th - 10th grade students, in preparation for the PSAT and SAT. It has a thorough grammar section that I haven't found in any other prep guide.
I bought this for my 10th grader to prepare for the PSATS. I was surprised when she said it is also a great homework resource. I see many bookmarks in it, so that can only be a good sign.
Useful book, no doubt, but I don't like the cover says there are 6 practice tests while actually there are 1 diagnose test plus 3 practice tests in the book. Extra two are counted as online access,
Reading advise from students who received perfect scores on the PSAT and SAT, the ultimate recommendation is actual test exposure that is timed. What is so great about the McGraw-Hill workbook is the detailed explanation of answers. This is invaluable. It is better than just knowing an answer was right, but not knowing the reason why.
Although my daughter did well on her sophomore PSAT in 2007, when she was a sophomore, she made 4 errors in the Writing Skill section and wanted to improve her score in her junior year PSAT. I used McGraw Hill's PSAT book to coach her for the 2008 PSAT. It really is worth its weight in gold!!! It contains a fantastic writing skill review categorized in 15 concepts, each of which comes with a 1-page mini concept review followed by additional practice. The 15 concepts are so well explained, so succinctly written, and so user-friendly that make writing skill improvement a piece of cake! After relentless practice with this book (and also with Barron's PSAT workbook) last summer, my daughter not only writes much better at school in her junior year, she did great on PSAT (upper 99 percentile)and a perfect score (80) in the Writing Section! Thank you, McGraw Hill!
Having used Kaplan's and Barron's PSAT prep books to prepare a 10th grader for the 2014 PSAT (the old format, the 2015 test will be changed to conform with the 2016 changes to the SAT) I have found McGraw-Hill's math problems in practice sets significantly more difficult than those in Kaplan or Barron's. While I would consider Kaplan's below par, McGrawHill's math sets are above par in difficulty. As such these math problems are appropriate for students already familiar with the questions asked and who are striving for an exceptionally high math score, I would not suggest them to beginners.

As for its approach to reading comprehension and writing parts of the test I have not been impressed by their presentation or explanations of the material.
The book is sufficient for the exam, and includes some good practice tests as well.

The chapters are well laid-out, and the explanations are also thorough. The only aspect that I though was a slight drawback was that some of the teaching principles are made harder than they actually are. For example, in math distance problems, they teach you a rather complicated way to learn how to solve them, when there are easier and just as efficient ways to do them, as I saw in actual SAT books. But this only applies for some of the explanations, and most are fine.

The writing sections was the biggest plus-point of this book as they divided it into fifteen important rules, that come up on the PSAT/SAT quite frequently.

Critical Reading is a challenging portion of the exam for some, but this book manages to give some efficient strategies which help you improve.
