Emma Estes cannot escape the despair of her husband's death. She shuns hapless therapy, well-meaning friends and her adored beach cottage. With her beloved dog, Jane, she escapes to Cody, Wyoming for the winter. There, life offers little more than she left behind, until a large Shoshone man stops to change her flat tire. His ensuing pursuit of her is haunting and Emma is on the verge of running again. Something indefinable encourages her to stay as she attempts to rebuff the Indian's charismatic draw. She loses her heart only to find her life in danger as she becomes the pawn in a fraudulent horse breeding scheme.

Rick Tanoats is a traditional Shoshone, spiritually strong and culturally committed. He is a swarthy, gifted horse breeder. It has been many years since, as a young boy, Rick sat in a sweat lodge with his grandfather experiencing a vision of a white woman and a yellow dog. Now he must navigate the turmoil of conflict before him. His gentle nature begins to disintegrate as chaos looms. Rick learns his self-confidence and fearlessness can unravel when his heart takes over. Rick makes bad choices and danger pursues, threatening what is most important to him.

Emma and Rick's journey compels self-examination, exposing pride, arrogance and fear. Within each other they find means to overcome the flaws which disabled them from moving forward. Ultimately, they find in each other an essential and compassionate love. But are they strong enough to overcome the malevolent forces?

Books are written for many reasons. Some are written to entertain, some to teach, some to make you laugh, to cry, or to incite the reader to take action on a subject important to the writer. In Robin Keene’s impressive first novel, “Song of the Hunter,” she accomplishes several of these goals, the first and most important being to entertain and hold the reader’s interest.
Emma Estes, living in a charming cottage in North Carolina, still has not yet completely recovered from the loss of her husband. After two years she still deeply suffers from his death, only made worse by the efforts of other residents to cheer her up and encourage her to start dating.
Believing she has to get away from well-meaning friends and the sorrow of her empty house, Emma receives a travel brochure in the mail and impulsively rents a townhome in Cody, Wyoming. For six months. In the winter.
Avoiding the “meet cute” trope often used by first-time authors, Keene also introduces us to Rick Tanoats, a Shoshone Indian who believes, through a vision he received during a ritual held in a sweat lodge with his beloved grandfather, his fate is predetermined for him; it is to be with a black-haired woman with a small dark mark on her face. He meets Emma, and is shaken to the core by her beautiful black hair and the small birthmark near her eye.
Rick’s pursuit of the woman he sees as his destiny and Emma’s reluctance to do anything considered disloyal to the memory of her late husband are only two of the obstacles our protagonists must overcome. Underhanded dealings on the part of the father of the woman Rick broke up with to pursue Emma, and the great differences in their cultures and history, keep the two apart until Emma decides she can love Rick until springtime, when her lease is up and she is to return to North Carolina.
However, Emma finds herself not only falling completely in love with Rick, a love she discovers will not expire with her lease, she is fascinated by his Indian heritage, his rituals, and his way of life, all of which make him the man she doesn’t always understand but cannot leave.
Brake lines are mysteriously cut, valuable horses are stolen, and Emma is kidnapped by the father of Rick’s rejected lover. Keene introduces all these events seamlessly, our lovers overcome all obstacles and Keene’s love story is brought to the satisfying conclusion you as a reader hope for.
The novel seeks to inform as well as entertain. Rick’s personality and character are formed by not only the beliefs and spirituality of his people but also the history of mistreatment by the government. Keene’s reminders of the treatment of Native Americans by the European invasion of America and the 19th century Army campaigns are gentle but firm, rooted in painstaking research, making her pronouncements ring true.
Keene’s writing also shines in less political ways. Emma, seeing Rick unclothed for the first time, describes him as being “the rare man crafted directly from the hand of God.” Regretting not being able to protect Emma, resulting in her abduction, Rick insists Emma leave Cody and return to North Carolina, but he soon realizes his mistake and goes to her to plead for forgiveness. Rick hopes his explanation and apology will “sand down the splinters of her angry resolve.”
Romance, suspense, history, someone needs to make this book into a movie.

Song of the Hunter edition by Robin Keene Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

This is a great read. It employs all the qualities of good romance and was obviously not thrown together overnight. Robin Keene has done a lot of research and delivers a sincere and valid portrayal of Native American sensitivities. There is no stereotyping in this book and each character has been so intricately developed, their personal hurdles and challenges relatable. This story speaks to the heart of the romance reader. Robin Keene obviously draws on the realities of life and fears of love. The sub-plot provides suspense and is woven through at well determined pace. The author provides a voice for animals and advocates for rescue and adoption, a nice side-line in the story. Still, the bottom line is that this is a romance novel, and in that vein, this book delivers! Love scenes add spice without being graphic or overdone. It's a heartfelt journey for the main characters, Emma and Rick. I give this book five stars.
Beautifully written. Historically accurate. An easy read for any level. Story line keeps you anticipating the next page. Highly recommended.
Ms. Keene writes beautiful landscape scenes, i felt that I was walking through the woods alongside Emma and Jane! The characters are fabulous. I absolutely loved Jane. It was a touching love story that I enjoyed immensely.
The Song of the Hunter was such an enjoyable book. It is a great story about a woman who finds love again after being widowed. The characters in the story captivate you and make you want to just spend the day reading about their story. It is emotional, informative and suspenseful. I would recommend this book!
Thank you Ms Keene for such a captivating and heartwarming story! You are a very talented writer!
Although this story has crammed and spelling mistakes, it is still wonderful! It is now a favorite . I will definitely read it again.
